The changing face of visual effects (VFX)

VFX are vital in the making of many new movies. VFX are used extensively in all kinds of movie genres – not just sci-fi or superhero films.

For example, VFX were used throughout ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ to remove or add backgrounds and move scenes from one location to another.

The amount that modern feature films spend on VFX has gone up from around 10% of budget to between 20% and 50% over the last 20 years, as more and more movies are made using VFX.

Over the same period of time, the UK has become a global centre of excellence for visual effects. For example, the ‘Harry Potter’ series were produced in the UK over a 10-year period – helping to boost our effects industry and providing much-needed stability.

The UK now has 4 of the largest visual effects companies in the world that are constantly developing the craft and pushing the industry forward.

UK companies have won the Oscar for VFX 6 times in the last 10 years for ‘Gravity’, ‘Interstellar’, ‘The Golden Compass’, ‘Inception’, ‘Ex Machina’ and ‘The Jungle Book’.

Looking at just one company, Framestore, shows how dominant UK companies are in this area. Out of the 10 films considered for a VFX Oscar in 2018, Framestore worked on 4 – ‘Alien: Covenant’, ‘Blade Runner 2049’, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.’ and ‘Kong: Skull Island’.

The UK’s success is partly to do with the film tax relief. Production companies can claim up to 25% back in tax relief for qualifying movies.

Our advanced transport and technology infrastructure also plays a large part. Collaboration is a big part of VFX, with many companies in different countries working together to create a film.

The UK continues to set the standard for storytelling and creativity in filmmaking.
